- Does your child appear clumsy when running, jumping, or throwing/catching a ball?
- Does your child have difficulty maintaining an upright posture when sitting or standing for any period of time?
- Does your child struggle with learning skills such as skating, riding a bicycle or dribbling a ball?

Gross motor skills refer to the movements and coordination of the large muscles of the body – such as the trunk, the arms, and the legs. Gross motor skills develop from birth and include crawling, walking, running, and jumping. Skills become more complex as the child grows – to swimming, riding a bicycle, and participating in sports. Gross motor skills include core strength which is the base of stability from which fine motor movements can occur.
Challenges with learning gross motor skills can be part of a broader set of motor issues called dyspraxia or Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Motor planning is a large part of gross motor skills. Proper motor planning is required for essentially everything that we do, but challenges can be first and most notable in a child’s gross motor skills development.
At Achieve Therapy Centre, our clinicians will assess your child’s gross motor skills in both a structured and semi-structured fashion. Our goal is to find a unique and motivating way to help your child strengthen and further develop their gross motor skills.
