Literacy: Reading & Writing

  • Has your child’s teacher expressed concerns about their reading skills?
  • Does your child hesitate or avoid reading and writing tasks?

We want to help your child become a confident reader and writer!

Reading difficulties are occurring if a child is reading at a lower level than what is expected for their age or if they are reading but not understanding the content of what is being read. There may also be some pre-literacy (pre-reading) or phonological awareness difficulties which include knowing the sounds of letters.

At Achieve Therapy Centre, our speech-language pathologists have a special interest in reading and writing. Some children struggle to become fluent readers and effective spellers because they missed a few steps early in the development of reading (phonological awareness).

Going back to the basics of reading and spelling can ensure that your child develops all these steps properly to become a confident reader and writer. Our initial assessment will look at your child’s core language skills, phonological awareness abilities, reading skills, working memory and narrative skills.

Therapy sessions will be based on your child’s current abilities and be individualized through challenging but attainable goals.

Parent training is a large part of reading and writing therapy so you can continue to work with your child outside of the therapy sessions. Home programming is provided between therapy sessions to ensure your child makes steady progress.
